What To Do Before Creating App

Creating an app is one of the most rewarding experiences you can have. It can bring your vision to reality and change your life. It can also be a complex endeavor.

As a team, we’ve built hundreds of apps. Before starting a new project, here’s what you should do in order to maximize your chances of success, get to market faster, and build the best app.

Determine your target customer.

Understanding whose problem you're solving will help you make better product and marketing decisions. Even if you’re trying to create a mass-market product, niching down early will help you solve the problem best. Facebook is used by everyone, but it started as a network for college students.

Keep the big picture in mind, but focus on a specific customer. Know the customers’ pain points, the likelihood that they’ll pay to solve the problem, and their general tendencies.

Clearly define the problem.

Know what you’re doing to make the world a better place. Know what the problem is and exactly why this problem is worth solving in the first place.

Set the vision for where you want to go.

It’s important to know where you’re going. If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll never get there.

Visualize what the finished product will look like, how many people use it, and what your customers say about the application. Sharing this vision with your team will put everyone on the same page as to why you’re building this app in the first place.

Nobody does this.

If a development team can understand the why behind the project, it will be more motivating for everyone involved in the project.

Interview your target customer.

Talking to your target customer can be one of the most important things you’ll ever do. You’ll learn more about their day-to-day, what their biggest problems are, and how they respond to your solution.

When interviewing, it’s important to dig into the reason behind the answers. Ask “why” to pry into your target customers’ answers and get to the real reason.

Create wireframes.

Actually putting pixels on the screen or pen to paper is the first step in your app becoming a reality.

One of the best tools you can use for wireframing is Balsamiq. It’s a simple tool for creating wireframes and mockups. You don’t even need to be a designer to use Balsamiq. It’s the perfect tool for entrepreneurs and Product Managers to get their idea off the ground.

Get the app designed.

Getting the app designed is the biggest step for bringing your idea to reality. You’ll see exactly what the app will look like and can use a tool like Invision to get a feel for the interaction in the application. We use Invision to hand over real designs to clients so they can tap around and visualize what their app will look like.

Build the app.

Now that you have a design in place, it’s time to execute the development. There are many different options for hiring an app developer [link to the post on hiring an app developer].
